What: New original outdoor paintings by over 25 artists in an art festival & sale

Plein air painting is the experience of painting in nature without the four walls of a studio. The 2023 Tenth Annual Plein Air-Painting Between the Bluffs festival and competition includes over 25 regional artists who compete for best original landscape art--all painted outdoors and between the bluffs of the Coulee Region. The art will be displayed and for sale at a public art show Sept. 23th and 24th at Studio Gallery 1311, located at 1311 Market St. in La Crosse. More details are at www.betweenthebluffs.com.

“This is our tenth year inviting regional artists to produce fine art with a limited time frame and geographic focus. Each artist must paint their work outdoors within a 15 mile radius of downtown La Crosse,” explained Ellen Kallies, one of the organizers of the event. “The artists have the good fortune of beautiful weather and endless painting venues from wetlands, to bluffs, cityscapes and farmland. By capturing these pristine locations in nature through art, we are highlighting the beauty of the region and the importance of protecting these areas.”

The Festival Includes These Public Events:

Artists “Quick Paint “Competition Saturday Sept. 23 at Grandad's Bluff in La Crosse. Artists will compete to produce their work of art in a two hour window starting at 10 am. The public is welcome to attend. Awards will be given at 1 p.m. Winners will also be displayed at the final show. Location: Grandad Bluff City Park (top of Bliss Road, follow the signs).

Artists Reception & Awards (Meet the Artists). Friday Sept. 22, 6-9 p.m.

The Gallery Art Show and Sale is the main event of the Plein Air Festival

Saturday Sept. 23 from 11am to 4pm and Sunday Sept. 24 from 12pm to 3pm at Studio Gallery 1311 located at 1311 Market Street, La Crosse.

Admission is free and the paintings from the competing artists will be on display.

All of the paintings will be original works of art created in the previous two week period within a 15 mile radius of downtown La Crosse. Featured locations include La Crescent's skunk hollow wetlands, La Crosse city scapes, farms, rivers, bluff views, secluded coulees and other locations chosen by the artists. This is a rare opportunity to view beautiful bluff land scenery in an artist’s rendition. The paintings will be judged and awarded by nationally-known artist Frank Eber (http://www.frankeber.com/about/artist-statement/) who is also teaching a workshop for artists Sept. 18 – 24th.

Between the Bluffs Plein Air Festival is supported by the La Crosse Arts Initiative, Studio Gallery 1311 and other local organizations and individuals. Full list is available here: https://betweenthebluffs.com/page/12931/2023-sponsors
